Recipes for Essential Oils in Floor and Carpet Cleaners

One great way to give your entire home a refreshing scent that will last for a long time is to incorporate essential oils into your floor and carpet cleaning routines.  If you’ve never tried this before, I think you’ll be amazed at how long the aroma of the essential oils will linger.  You may even become so accustomed to the scent that you don’t notice it, but visitors to your home surely will.

Easy Carpet Cleaner Recipe with Essential Oils

Take 1 cup of Borax (you can find this in the detergent aisle of the supermarket) and add 10 drops of your favorite essential oil or essential oil blend.  Place in a plastic bag and shake well to mix.  Be sure to work the oil in well with your fingertips so that it is as evenly distributed into the Borax as possible.  After mixing, sprinkle on your carpet.  If you are able, let the mixture sit on the carpet for 5-10 minutes before vacuuming.  You don’t have to wait before vacuuming, but if you do, it will help with the carpet-cleaning duties of the mixture.  Also, it will be easier to apply the mixture to the carpet if you place it in a shaker bottle first.

Essential Oils Floor Cleaner Recipe

Mix up a batch of warm water with Murphy’s Oil Soap as directed on the label or as you normally would to clean your floor.  For each gallon of water, add about 5-10 drops of essential oil and mix again.  I’ve found that I prefer to mix the essential oils with the oil soap first and then add that solution to the water.  This helps a bit with the evaporation problem that can arise if your water is too warm.
